“Megibung” Tradition In Bali

Reputedly, according to the history, traditions megibung (lunch or dinner together with some people in a large plate) come from across the island, namely Lombok. When a squad of soldiers brought the King of Karangasem crossing to Lombok, they see the tradition of eating with the local community do the Moslems. King likes the tradition, and then encouraged his soldiers to eat together, which he considered as one way of democratic and bridge the gap. King lesehan sit and eat with the troops. The soldiers were motivated by an attitude that kamaraderi. Egalitarian tradition that originally somewhat militaristic is then taken home and adapted into popular culture in Karangasem.

Maybe because it was originally derived from a military tradition, until now seems the existence of “discipline” in the administration of megibung. Rules megibung enough known by the people of Karangasem as the values passed down through generations. Burp, sneeze, spit, (sorry, too fart), forbidden during megibung. Hands should be washed before facing food, forbidden to talk and laugh loudly, and dropped the crumbs are prohibited from bites – especially from the mouth.

Rice served on the platter or tray. Side dishes served on another platter. A person who is appointed will use clean hands to divide the rice into small mounds in accordance with the number of people sitting lesehan mengeliling platter. Similarly, side dishes divided evenly.

Side dishes for megibung fairly standard. For the official rituals, for example, should there lawar pancawarna, a kind urap consisting of five kinds of leaves, including leaves, starfruit. Satenya have four kinds: fish, buffalo, pigs, chickens. In the past, for certain ceremonies, there are mandatory turtle satay. Now, for the sake of preservation, very special permission is needed to bring the turtle satay.

Near Tirtagangga, about five years ago, I had a duck dish dipesona by menyatnyat presented in a gibungan. Cooked with herbs or base mejangkep genep (full flavor), this menyatnyat duck – I think – more delicious than the duck goby. Ah, this dish is often made me termimpi-dream.

Side dish for megibung usually also involve various types of piles (steamed dishes in banana leaves) and message (Pepes fuel). Tum My favorite in this area is protected (eel), and telengis (coconut oil dregs, blondo). There were also piles of chicken and then fried. Really, that special touch.
